Palo Maiden, pamumuna para kay Amorsolo

“Palo Maiden, pamumuna para kay Amorsolo” discusses my relationship to my body through lenses of colonization, capitalism, and traditional notions of nationalism as a Filipina. Referencing Fernando Amorsolo’s famed series of paintings of fair-skinned, rural Filipina maidens whose images promoted national pride, this series explores a reclamation and critique of these archetypes of gendered identity. With this work, I remind all of my viewers to continue to shatter gendered notions of Filipinx identity, and to keep pushing the boundaries of how our bodies are perceived and how we authentically want to transform and proclaim our bodies.
